At the Chapter’s Annual General Meeting recently, Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor Chapter named its new Committee members for a new term – 2019-2022.

The flag bearers are Chairman, Ivan Teo (General Manager of Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort); first Vice-Chairman, Khairil Hafez Yahya (General Manager of Lakeview Terrace Resort, Pengerang); second Vice-Chairman, Tang Li Peng (Resident Manager of Amansari Hotel Nusajaya); Honorary Treasurer, Sunny Soo (General Manager of Pulai Springs Resort) and Honorary Secretary, Jef Kong (General Manager of Le Grandeur Palm Resort).

The rest of the committee members include elected committee members, Daniel Alcaraz who heads CSR and MICE (General Manager of DoubleTree by Hilton); Arthur Lee who heads Singapore Business portfolio (Managing Director of Belllo Hotel); Indra Gandhi (Group Operations Director of Lotus Desaru Resort) and Tan Ai Lee as Internal Auditor (General Manager of New York Hotel).

Other committee members have been co-opted for their various expertise, namely Michael Bay who heads Liaison for the Committee, Stephen Teo who heads Star-Rating and Petrus Leong who heads HR and Star-Rating. The Secretary to Chairman, Ivan Teo is Yvonne Loh (Marketing Communications Consultant with Ponderosa Golf & Country Resort).

“This year MAH will take over to head JTA (Johor Tourism Association), taking over from JGTA (Johor Tourist Guides Association) to lead and represent the tourism and hospitality portfolio to deal directly with Johor Tourism authorities and MOTAC (Ministry of Tourism & Culture) on the state level, on issues concerning industry,” said Teo.

“NGOs like us must stand together to ensure that fundamentals in tourism are in place first before introducing new tourism products. Basics such as ensuring easy interconnectivity and infrastructural convenience for tourists travelling within the state, maintenance of public services and facilities e.g. clean and functioning toilets, and bring promotion of international level events in Johor such as Chingay, Kite Festival, Dragon Boat racing etc. to reach out to an international audience rather than just local audience. In the more immediate future, hotels need to stand together against illegal accommodation operators as well as AirBnB.”

JTA was elected some years ago by the previous EXCO State Tourism as the main association to represent nine other travel and hospitality-related NGOs in Johor, that includes as MyBHA (Malaysian Budget Hotels Association), MCTA (Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association, JTGA (Johor Tourist Guides Association), MITA (Malaysian Inbound Travel Association), Johor Homestay Association, Johor Golf Association, MAH, MAHO (Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners), to name a few. These NGOs take turn on a yearly basis to head JTA. This year it is MAH’s turn to lead.
